You can just feel the wheels in motion for the fall and the fall film festival season. While some of these films do not have U.S. release dates yet, many have openings just around the corner and many are already receiving international releases. And so we’ve collected a few new posters that have landed for a quartet of films that have already premiered elsewhere earlier this year, and will likely drop into theaters or festivals in the next six months.
Let’s start with the earliest film, Terry Gilliam’s “The Zero Theorem.” It debuted way back at the 2013 at the Venice Film Festival (our review here). It stars Christoph Waltz, Mélanie Thierry, Lucas Hedges Tilda Swinton, David Thewlis and Matt Damon, and it’s about an eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst in a dystopian future age, perhaps not unlike Gilliam’s “Brazil” but much more technologically advanced. The first poster Gilliam wanted to unveil was banned by the MPAA because it showed a glimpse of Christoph Waltz’s butt. But undeterred Gilliam has released a new poster and it looks pretty cool. The movie hits theaters September 19th and can be seen one month early OnDemand and on iTunes on August 19th.
The next poster is for Jake Paltrow’s “The Young Ones.” This one debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival in January (our review), and it’s got a great cast including Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The movie takes place in a post-crisis, not-too-distant future where severe droughts have ravaged the country and water is brutally scarce. And it’s a about a power struggle between a father (Shannon) and a local suitor (Hoult) who is dating his young daughter (Fanning). Not word yet on a U.S. release date, but it wouldn’t surprise us if it hit the Toronto International Film Festival next.
Next up, two movies from Cannes that you will definitely be seeing on the fall film festival circuit, undoubtedly TIFF and maybe Telluride or Fantastic Fest too (Venice tends to only play new titles). The first is David Cronenberg’s “Maps To The Stars” a type of Hollywood satire (though Cronenberg just calls it an observation of real things happening within the industry). It stars Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, John Cusack, Olivia Williams, Sarah Gadon and more. There’s no release date for it yet, but eOne is said to be releasing it in the fall. You can bet because Cronenberg is Canadian, perhaps the Martin Scorsese of that country, the movie will have a plum spot at TIFF, to be sure. A few new photos of this one here too. Lastly, another Cannes picture from an auteur with a starry cast: Olivier Assayas’ “Clouds Of Sils Maria,” which centers on an aging actress and the relationship between her career and her assistant. It stars Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, Chloe Moretz-Grace, Johnny Flynn, Brady Corbet and more. You can guarantee you’ll see this one at TIFF and maybe Telluride, and then it’ll see a release shortly thereafter (though it’s possible it could be held for the following spring ala “Enemy,” “Under The Skin,” “Only Lovers Left Alive” and “The Double” – the new indie-friendly season). IFC Films will do the releasing in the U.S. So that’s it. Check out each poster and keep your eyes out as release dates can’t be far behind.
The buzz today is about the new trailer for Maps to the Stars, a film that has already been announced for TIFF, naturally, since Cronenberg is one of their brightest stars.
North America will embrace the delicious wickedness of MTTS and probably be bored senseless by the talky European CoSM. Just being realistic. And again, Julianne Moore is the one who won Best Actress at Cannes, no small feat. TIFF should be very exciting this year.
America has a different style concept film than the European film. Cronenberg is quite dark for me. Happiness is to see for film buffs Clouds of Sils Maria. It's a movie caress, but not everyone loves French films, as I.
Moore performance in mtts is good. She certainly would have deserved in America awards for his work, just not sure, from which film it will be. I totally waiting for her film Still Alice. Excellent scenario.
Stewart, Binoche and Moretz are almost magnetic, absolutely great in Cloud of Sils Maria. It is a masterful implementation of work of the actresses in this film.
IMDb for Clouds of Sils Maria is 1 win, nominees. Juliette Binoche it is equally good as Moore. It's about style, which is spoken in the film. CoSM would win in each direction. Vulgarity Cronenberg hidden for satire but might be successful on the American continent.
Word of advice Playlist…I think its time to shut down your comment section especially when posting any and all news relating to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Clearly they both have immature vile fans that cannot seem to conduct a civil conversation. Please don't let these idiots lead you to believe that ALL RP and KS fans are bad. There is a SMALL percentage out there (like 5%) that are decent.
Secondly, the fall fests are my favorite and I cannot wait to see what movies make the list this year. I am very much looking forward to Maps and Sils Maria both movies have similar themes YET execute them in very different ways. From what I have seen Julianne Moore really shines and totally deserved her award. I really hope they take this performance to the Academy. Julianne is truly an amazing actress. (on a side note cannot wait to also see her in THG Mockingjay Pt 1)
Its pretty clear that outside the Twilight films, both Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have showed they are both very talented. I can see both having long lasting careers and the great thing is they are doing movie THEY want to do. Such a rare feature in young actors these days. Again there are very few in HW in this catagory. I have to admit, once I left that Twilight fandom my appreciation for both Rob and Kristen, individually skyrocketed. Two very intelligent, hard working and talented individuals. Don't let the idiotic fans help you make your decision about Rob and Kristen….let their work speak for itself. Thank you.
It would be interesting to see MTT Clouds of Sils Maria at Toronto festival, but I think it will not be happen.
In Europe gained Clouds of Sils Maria great reviews, Binoche won the critics' prize at the Cannes Film Festival. It Binoche film and Stewart's good too.
Assayas has created a wonderful new style of film Bergman is.
I do not think Cronenberg would be capable carry the comparison of these two films in Canada.

It's interesting to see that both movies deal with a similar theme: an older actress trying to remain relevant into the harsh movie world but with a totally different approach. Looking forward to watch them.
I can't believe what a vile, unhappy, homophobic bunch this Twilight fandom really is, particularly Robert's fans. Then, Kristen's fans respond to them in the same vile manner. Robert Pattinson fans really need to be careful. When he announces that he's trying to flirt with Guy Pearce on a movie set, you might want to rethink your attack strategy. Your attempt to insult Kristen by calling her gay may backfire on you.
I caught some of these at Cannes. They were all great with good acting and direction. For me Miss Moore was outstanding and deserved her award. It is also worth a mention that Kristen Stewart is good in Clouds Of Sils Maria, I was pleasantly surprised. She seemed very natural not like in her previous films with the exception of Adventure-land. If she sticks to the same character role she might survive in the business, character actor she is not.
No one on here is being homophobic, If you read coherently you would understand that what is being said is that Media sites are using fans of Robert and Kristen as a couple for hits and that Kristen confirming her new relationship would stop it. It doesn't matter who she is dating, man or woman.. Why hard any Kristen fan would think they need to defend anyone who says she is lesbian or bisexual I have no clue, you seem to have the problem with it.. Clouds of Sils Maria got fantastic reviews, it will be a good film.

I have heard excellent reviews from these movies ( by people who understand this kind of movies, obviously not the playlist ) , hope to see them soon, I am more excited for maps and clouds of sils maria juliette and julianne are both excellent actresses and kristen received also great reviews for clouds. even though they deal with a similar theme Assayas and cronemberg are so different in they filmaking
