Got a Tip?

New Posters and Images Debut For ‘Goon’ (No, Not ‘The Goon’)

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this week is “Goon,” a hockey comedy co-written by Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen‘s writing partner Evan Goldberg, which, it should be noted, is not the David Fincher-produced animation adaptation of the Eric Powell comic book “The Goon” nor is it the two-part Kevin Smith hockey epic “Hit Somebody” (which will presumably be the “Che” of bawdy hockey comedies). What it is, as we noted when the red band trailer debuted, a mediocre-looking comedy about a hockey coach who recruits a thug (Sean William Scott) to stop a violence-prone opponent (Liev Schreiber), notable only for Schreiber’s truly awesome mustache.

JoBlo debuted two posters for the film today, one of which prominently features said moustache, with the other featuring Sean William Scott’s sneering mug (complete with cracked teeth, bruised cheek, etc). Both posters reinforce the idea that it’s a hockey comedy, a violent hockey comedy (because, you know, hockey is known for its violence – the wet splat of blood against ice, the tinny tinkle of teeth falling out of a grown man’s skull) but besides that are hopelessly dull and by-the-numbers.

In case that simply wasn’t enough “Goon”-y goodness for you, we have a pair of new images to share as well, courtesy of the official Toronto International Film Festival website. Oddly enough they feature the two lead actors in a hockey rink, and one of the pics holds a glory shot of Schreiber’s remarkable facial hair.

No word yet on a domestic release for “Goon,” but we should be hearing about the film’s quality (or lack thereof) in the days ahead. Hopefully the movie is better than the poster.

  1. Mike, you are right on. I don\’t know anything about this website, but the part about snide comments is so on target. The writer hadn\’t even seen the movie but was compelled to quite obviously slap it around. Alas, as it turned out, you are now hard-pressed to find anybody who actually saw it able to say anything that isn\’t glowing. It was one of the smash hits at the TIFF. ha ha.

  2. I like the poster. And this movie is NOT mediocre.
But then what would an IndieWire article be without a bunch of snide comments by a writer with zero taste and his head squarely up his pretentious ass?
