Got a Tip?

New Moon Soundtrack Unveiled; Features Thom Yorke, Death Cab, Muse, Bon Iver, Indie Etc., Due October 20

The soundtrack details for Chris Weitz’s “Twilight” sequel, “New Moon,” has been unveiled and it’s indie-tastic.

The disc, due October 20 via Chop Shop/Atlantic (“New Moon” music soundtrack supervisor Alexandra Patsavas’ label), features many rumored/partially-confirmed artists like, The Killers, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Death Cab For Cutie (who wrote the first single) and Muse.

It’s sort of like a Now That’s What I Call Indie Music Perfect For Tweens Who Like Vampires (and that’s basically what Patsavas does well — comps for Urban Outfitters kids). The Thom Yorke song, “Hearing Damage,” is a new song recorded for the film, considering we’ve never heard that title before and so is the Bon Iver collaboration with St. Vincent (that could actually be interesting if not for the fact that it was actually written for this movie). In fact, as Stephenie Meyer writes, “all of the music is original, and exclusive to the soundtrack.” Frankly, if we were one of these bands, we’d prefer selling them an old song and be done with it rather than being that closely affiliated with “Twilight” and write a song specifically for the film, but to each his own we guess. Those indie-rock groupies don’t lay themselves.

Additional bands on the soundtrack probably earning a pretty penny to participate include OK GO, Lykke Li, Black Rebel Motorcycle and Editors. Alexandre Desplat (“Benjamin Button,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox”) composed the score.

“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” (its full title) hits theaters November 20. The trailer so far looks laughable and the werewolves’ special-effects look like they’re right out of “The Golden Compass,” which makes total sense because Weitz directed that too (hopefully some Coca Cola bears show up at some point.) Best of luck with this one. This new image found over at Rolling Stone is hilarious. Love this new meme.

Update: Grizzly Bear’s song on the “Twilight: New Moon” soundtrack is a duet with Beach House’s Victoria Legrand. Never has so much talent congregated in one spot for something so worthless.

“New Moon” soundtrack tracklist:

Here’s a new single from Thom Yorke that’s not from this soundtrack called, “The Hollow Earth.”

  1. Stereogum is streaming Thom Yorke's other two new songs (although one is an old one actually). Only problem is they suck 🙁

Let's hope Hearing Damage is better. Also, I heard the film might use Radiohead too, but just not include it on the soundtrack like the first one did. Hope this is true.

  2. Eh…there was a time I would've minded, but now, not so much. I don't want them to ever get uncool and cheesy like so many other aging rock musicians (yes, Paul McCartney, I'm talking to you) but I like hearing their stuff in films. Even if it's crap.

  3. Thats very true about Radiohead. In the 90's Oasis was poised to become the next Beatles and Radiohead was on their way to becoming an all-time great band. Its sad how both of them went by the wayside.

I cant wait for this soundtrack, and for the movie…Kristen Stewart is super fine!

  4. People don't even realize that there are more than just "12 year olds" that like Twilight, they don't even fully understand it. I listen to indie 1031 and I love Twilight and all these artists, the writers who write articles like this, just base it off the the first movie and the more vocal fans, which are obviously teenagers. I too am only 16, about to be 17 but I have already been listening to this music and couldn't be happier. Obviously the musicians see something in Twilight too
