While the film portion of SXSW might be over, this weekend in Austin a plethora of bands are vying for attention in the clubs and streets of the city for the music portion of the festival. And it appears Terrence Malick was on hand as well.
Just as he did last fall at both the Austin City Limits and Fun Fun Festival, Malick and his crew reportedly hit SXSW to shoot scenes for “Lawless.” Whether this is more pre-production work or stuff that will end up in the film that will “officially” shoot this fall remains to be seen, but it’s another public glimpse at the usually private working process for the director. Thus far, Rooney Mara appears to be the only one on hand (Ryan Gosling is currently shooting “Only God Forgives” halfway around the world) and that dude standing beside her? Alan Palomo from Neon Indian.
As for what the film was about, the recently revealed (and then scrubbed) logline says it will follow intersecting love triangles, sexual obsession and betrayal against the backdrop of the Austin music scene. Of course, what it’s actually about once Malick is done with it could be something else entirely. Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Haley Bennett co-star in the pic.
No release date for “Lawless” yet, as it’s just one of four films Malick has in the cooker. But if you’re at SXSW, keep your eyes peeled…. [JustJared]
I can't wait for his next two films but I am more interested in seeing Natalie Portman. I really want to see her work with him I have no idea what to expect but I am intrigued.
Hopefully its a muted 2 hour montage over some ethereal score.
She looks like Karen O.
Adorable as well.
Of course it's not just 'pre-production' work. That would be an expensive waste of time when Gosling and Mara have Only God Forgives and The Bitter Pill to focus on at the moment. It's a movie about live music in Austin, so to save on time and money and capture the reality of the setting they film whenever a major festival hits the area, even if the bulk of principal photography hasn't started yet. 1+1=2
As long as she keeps getting naked on screen, I 'll be there!
i didn't see anywhere Malick and his hat
A Terrence Malick film about hipster douchebags? Hey, that's terrific.
malick shooting rooney mara with neon indian at sxsw. so freakin cool!
