Eclectic filmmaker Rian Johnson has so far in his career made a highly original high-school-set neo-noir ("Brick") and a whimsical heist flick ("The Brothers Bloom"), but for his latest trick, he's pulled off a sci-fi time travel film about assassins who kill targets sent from the future into the past, thus altering the course of history. It's a high-concept project and we wouldn't expect anything less from Johnson, who is one of the most distinctive writer/directors working today.
Starring Bruce Willis, quickly rising star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Piper Perabo and Jeff Daniels among others, Johnson's latest, "Looper," centers on an assassin awaiting a future target to dispose of, only to discover, the target is the older version of himself. A pretty nifty dilemma if we do say so ourselves. Above is the latest image from the film (via Alliance Films) and we're sure more will be revealed from the film this week when it appears at Comic-Con.
Meanwhile, AICN has a first-listen preview of the film's score penned by Johnson's cousin, Nathan, who has scored all of his relations films thus far. While they have a creative shorthand to be sure, we'd love to see Johnson try and recruit some other musicians into the fold, a la what Paul Thomas Anderson has accomplished with Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead or what composer John Murphy and Underworld co-created for Danny Boyle's "Sunshine."
"Looper" hits theaters on September 28th, which may mean a bow during the Toronto International Film Festival.
