Got a Tip?

New ‘Deadpool’ Images, Ryan Reynolds Distances Himself From ‘X-Men: Origins’

DeadpoolR-rated super hero movies, or anti-super hero films, aren’t the norm. In fact, you can count on one hand how many restricted super hero movies there are and about the closest you’re going to come is Matthew Vaughn’s foul-mouthed and violent “Kick Ass.” He then arguably perfected the irreverant R-rated actioner model with his hyper violent and vulgar “Kingsman: The Secret Service” which grossed more than $400 million worldwide this year.

Next up in this mold of irreverent, flippant, f-bomb laden and stylistically violent R-rated super films is “Deadpool.” Ryan Reynolds been campaigning for this film for years, even though he’s basically disavowed the character from “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” and he said at Comic-Con the main reason “Deadpool” was green lit by 20thCentury Fox was because of the boisterously positive online response to the test footage that leaked last year (which still should never be justification to leak anything, btw).

"The mouth is not sewn shut at any point in this film," he told Empire today trying to distance himself as far away as the ‘X-Men: Origins’ film as possible. "I wasn’t even paid, I just insisted on that."

Directed by VFX guy Tim Miller, “Deadpool” went over like gangbusters at Comic-Con with its glib viciousness and impious humor so the choir is already converted. Now it’s a matter if Fox can sell the masses and “Deadpool” definitely seems like the best R-rated bet to date from this genre. Co-starring Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein and Gina Carano, “Deadpool” lands in theaters on a Valentine’s Day counter-programming date of February 12. Check out the new “Deadpool” images below.

  1. Mark no one\’s forcing you to see it. But there are a lot of people who want to, and who will. I can\’t wait for this film. Go watch The English Patient or something and shut up.

  2. Leon, the opposite could not be more true. People are always hating on PG-13 films, complaining that the rating is watering down and softening intense and powerful material, especially in the horror and action genres. I\’ve never heard ANYONE complain about how almost every superhero movie is PG-13. Sure, there are calls for Dredd 2 and another Punisher movie, but no one wants the genre to become overpopulated with R-rated movies. And in terms of the movies you mention, only Kingsmen, Kick-Ass 1, and Blade 1 & 2 are great (interesting how you claim to be a great critic and forgot Dredd). There hasn\’t been a great Punisher movie yet, Blade: Trinity was disappointing (Ryan Reynolds appears again…), and Kick-Ass 2 was garbage. You should be embarrassed to include it on any "great films" list.

  3. The only comic book film Fox is squeezing out that I\’d watch, although if my expectations get any lower they\’ll burrow through to the earth\’s core.

  4. Jeez that\’s a lot of cynicism describing this movie as a cynical cash-in. The marketing has been spot-on for the character and this has always been the role Reynolds was born to play! Reynolds has always been likable and his lack of a blockbuster is decently msyterious

  5. Maybe you find him unlikable but i really like him and his type of humor. We can\’t all like the same actor. This movie is going to be rated "R" and as a long time Deadpool fan that is a miracle in this pg day and age. As for Reynolds i can\’t think of another actor that already had Deadpool\’s humor down. So i\’m thinking it was perfect casting.

  6. the movie\’s rating is irrelevant. clearly this movie is a cynical cash-in with a truly embarrassing social media campaign and a leading actor desperate to stay in the limelight despite a history of smug, weak performances in awful movies. So yeah. Nobody gives much of a shit about this.

  7. Mark you\’re so wrong. This movie is going to be awesome in all its R rated glory. I am so tired of people hating on R rated films. Its like everyone from the 70s and 80s had kids and got scared or something. I am pumped for this film it will be classic. Now mr. Article writer here is a list of R rated comic book movies that go way beyond the few you mentioned.

3 punisher movies one from 1988 two from 2000s
    Blade 1, 2, and 3
DR mordrid (which was retitled its actually Dr. strange movie)
Add in the kingsmen Kick ass 1 and 2 and there are so much more. Who ever hired you should fire you and hire me instead.
