We’ve known the thumbs up rating system has been coming for a few weeks now, but today, Netflix has formally introduced the change, and has compared the new approach to… dating apps. I’m not sure that’s the best way to present this, but I’m no marketing expert.
Anyway, according to Netflix, the old star rating system was a bit bogus, because it didn’t do a good job of actually recommending things that you’d like. This new thumbs based approach — which leaves you with only two choices — will make it easier for Netflix to do the math, and find you something in your wheelhouse. They will now only suggest movies or TV shows that are a 95% match for your interests, making for a better experience. Basically, it’s the swipe right or swipe left approach to streaming.
Whether or not this will keep Adam Sandler‘s new movies off your Netflix homepage forever remains to be seen, but change is always… interesting. Gives us your thumbs up or down on this new approach in the comments section.
