Earlier today, Netflix unveiled its teaser trailer for all of the major film releases the streamer will debut in 2023. Yes, there were the usual suspects, folks like Kevin Hart, Adam Sandler, and Chris Hemsworth all have new projects coming to Netflix, per usual. But that doesn’t mean all of the news today was Netflix was filled with somewhat forgettable entries. We also got official news of when we’re going to see David Fincher’s “The Killer” and confirmation that two Wes Anderson films are coming in 2023.
In the teaser video, we saw some first-look footage from “The Killer,” the upcoming David Fincher film starring Michael Fassbender, Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, and more. Obviously, it’s just a tease, so we don’t get a ton of footage, but we did get confirmation that the film will arrive on November 10. Will that be preceded by a special theatrical release? You have to assume so. It’s just a matter of what that might look like. Will it get the week-long exclusive run a la “Glass Onion” or will it be just a select theater run a couple of weeks before the Netflix drop? We still don’t know for sure. It’ll also be interesting to see when/where Netflix debuts the film. You have to assume this will be one of the most sought-after films for the 2023 festival year.

In addition to the news about “The Killer,” we also got confirmation that Wes Anderson’s untitled Roald Dahl film, which everyone is calling “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” is getting a 2023 release. This is big news, not only because it’s a Wes Anderson film, but because ‘Henry Sugar’ is set to be the second film from the director released this year. We already know that Anderson’s “Asteroid City” (distributed by Focus Features) is set to be released on June 16. That film has an incredible all-star cast and already has a ton of buzz, as you come to expect from a Wes Anderson release. But ‘Henry Sugar’ is no slouch either. ‘Henry Sugar’ is set to star Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Sir Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, and Asa Jennings. Considering this is based on short stories from Dahl, you have to assume ‘Henry Sugar’ will be more of an anthology film, which is something Anderson has dabbled in recently.
What is most interesting, and maybe most confusing, about the Wes Anderson announcement is how this might shake up the awards season later this year. Yes, this is all premature to discuss, but we all know Wes Anderson films are always up for discussion when it comes to end-of-year awards. But two Anderson films? Will they take away from each other? Will they enhance each other? Is one lightyears better than the other? It’ll be fun to see how that shakes out.
