It’s been a half-decade since the release of Neill Blomkamp’s most recent feature film, “Chappie.” Since then, he’s been a busy filmmaker, working on short films with his production company and developing a number of projects, including his planned “RoboCop” sequel that he eventually departed. However, before the pandemic struck, the filmmaker had the intention to begin production on “Inferno” with Taylor Kitsch aboard as star. But like with everything, COVID had other plans and that feature is being pushed until 2021. That said, it appears that Blomkamp went ahead and decided to use the pandemic “break” to actually film a completely different project in secrecy.

According to Deadline, Blomkamp is finishing up a secret supernatural horror film that he worked on during the pandemic in the woods of Canada. Not much is known about the film other than the filmmaker followed the COVID protocols, hired a largely Canadian cast, and is said to be using the sci-fi elements that he’s always a fan of including in his features. The untitled film is supposedly a project that he’s been working on for a while and been wanting to make, but hadn’t had the chance, until now.
Blomkamp joins a growing list of folks that made short films or features during the pandemic. Most recently, we heard reports that Ben Wheatley also made a horror film over this time. One film that was made during lockdown that appears to be arriving sooner rather than later is “Songbird,” produced by Michael Bay. In addition, Netflix has Zendaya-starring film “Malcolm & Marie” arriving in early 2021.

The report claims that the feature should be done by early 2021, so there’s a strong possibility we could be seeing a new Neill Blomkamp film next year. Whether that’s in theaters or on a streaming service is still unknown, however. But even though “Chappie” wasn’t the best feature in the world, the filmmaker’s Oscar-nominated breakout film, “District 9,” is so good that we’re excited to see whatever else Blomkamp has up his sleeve.
