The saga of Neill Blomkamp‘s unmade “Alien” goes something like this: the director was gearing up to bring Sigourney Weaver back into the “Alien” universe with a proposed movie that would follow James Cameron‘s “Aliens,” and ignore everything that happened after. But franchise creator/producer Ridley Scott threw up a red flag at Fox, and demanded he make “Alien: Covenant” first, which is now landing this summer. But for those hoping that the wheels would start moving again on Blomkamp’s movie, don’t hold your breath.

Last week, the director was asked on Twitter about the chances of his “Alien” movie being made and the answer was quite simple from Blomkamp: “slim.”
There’s no reason given why that’s the case, but it certainly seems to be a sharp turn of events given that both Weaver and Michael Biehn have been enthusiastic about the project over the past year or so (even Cameron was pumped). I can only surmise that Scott is still not ready to hand over the franchise keys while he remains invested in his “Alien” prequels, which is kind of a drag, because it’s the story that, at least for me, is least essential to the property. An alternate narrative for Ripley is far more compelling — especially considering the varying qualities of “Alien 3” and “Alien: Resurrection” — and it would be nice to see Weaver kicking xenomorph butt again.

This makes me sad. Although it’s not surprising at all – it was amazing that this project ever started gathering steam in the first place.
The “Alien: Covenant” trailer makes it pretty clear that Ridley Scott plans to take the franchise and squeeze out as many fat paydays as possible, even if he burns the whole thing down in the process.
