As we learned on Friday, The Cyber is not without some critical weaknesses, as a DDoS attack took down several major websites (including Twitter, Spotify and Netflix) and crippled the internet. And with shows like “Mr. Robot” taking off, television executives want to boot up their own shows with point and click action that captures the zeitgeist, and NBC hopes they’ll have a winner with “Sneakers.”

The network TV series based on the 1992 attack was one of many during that time which dealt with the burgeoning online realities of the time. However, unlike most (“Hackers” and “The Net” for example,) “Sneakers” was actually pretty good, and rather remarkably brought together an ensemble that included Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Ben Kingsley, Dan Aykroyd and River Phoenix. The story followed a gang of thieves who used high tech means to break into the businesses of the clients who hired them to expose any security weaknesses. But things get heated when the crew signs up for a gig with NSA and uncover some nefarious stuff.
The producing team for this one has “Bates Motel” and “The Mentalist” among their credits, so take that for what it’s worth. It’s a long way to being greenlit so we’ll see if this ever pans out, but in the meantime, I’d recommend catching up with the movie. It’s a pretty fun one. [Deadline]
