It's coming on four years since Werner Herzog's last narrative feature – 2009's "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done" – and it looks like we're in for an even longer wait. Initially slated to start shooting in March in Morocco with Naomi Watts, Robert Pattinson and Jude Law, Herzog's biopic of Gertrude Bell – traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century – in "Queen Of The Desert," seems to be on hold.
Currently at the Sundance Film Festival to help promo "Two Mothers," which is making its World Premiere, Watts caught up with E! and revealed her collaboration with Herzog wasn't going to happen just yet. "It's still a way's off," she said. "I don't know yet. Hopefully, it will happen. I just can't travel again right now because I did a lot of traveling last year. It's been a big year and it's time for me to be home with the kids."
Also chatting up MTV (see below), Watts seemed a bit more optimistic, saying it could happen later this year or next, but also seemed uncertain if Pattinson was locked for the film. Either way, it seems like a few more things need to be solidified and schedules arranged before this can shoot, which is a bit of a bummer. But as always, Herzog has a few dozen projects on the go.
His documentary, "Happy People: A Year In The Taiga" opens this weekend, and he has another doc coming entitled "Hate In America." But most importantly, last fall Herzog signed on to direct the darkly comedic school shooting film "Vernon God Little," which the trades said at the time would be his "next project." And indeed, it certainly looks like it will play out that way if that goes to plan, but let's hope "Queen Of The Desert" isnt' too far behind.
Naomi and Jude Law are attached to this movie, but focus is on Pattinson as always, though his part is small. LOL
Cool. Herzog using a D-list actor like RPatz would be Cronenberg all over again. A big flop! lol
With Pattinson in it I was not going to watch it anyways…He is horrible in pretty much anything.
