It’s hard to believe that it was nearly two years ago when the world didn’t know the name Edward Snowden or what the NSA was really doing behind closed doors. His revelations about the massive amounts of data the intelligence agency was collecting about Americans and people around the world was an absolute powder keg, and it’s still reverberating to this day. Now the documentary "Citizenfour" takes us back all the way to the beginning of the story….
Early in 2013, director Laura Poitras found herself in an usual position. She had already been working on a film about surveillance in the post-9/11 era when a series of emails from an anonymous source tipped her that there was so much more going on. A few months later, she, along with journalist Glenn Greenwald, met Snowden in Hong Kong, camera in hand, capturing history as he spilled about what he knew from his days at the NSA.
This first teaser trailer is compelling stuff—if you think you know the whole story, it looks like there’s more to be uncovered. "Citizenfour" premieres at the New York Film Festival and opens on October 24th. Watch below.
