On this episode, I’m joined by Editor-in-Chief Rodrigo Perez to discuss “The Mummy,” and the hubris of the presumed cinematic universe model. “The Mummy” opens this weekend, and after dismal reviews — including Rod’s “D-” review — it’s set to gross even less than it’s originally projected $40 million opening (roughly $30M right now). That’s a soft number by any tentpole standards, let alone one that is set to kick off a nine-plus film franchise. We discuss how “The Mummy” stacks up against the models set by other cinematic universes (mostly against Marvel, the gold standard for this kind of franchise-feeding), and get to the bottom of how studios should approach doing a cinematic universe if they’re going to attempt it.

Dark Universe? Give me a break. Have Universal ever watched any of their amazing early films? How about this for an idea? Make these films horror first with a little action thrown in,instead of the other way around? Cruise and Crowe may be good for the multiplex,but they ain’t Karloff and Lugosi,and you need a James Whale to pull this off,someone BRILLIANT with a strong style who doesn’t give two shits about a shared universe.Why is that so difficult?
