Got a Tip?

More Toronto ’08 Film Fest Pics Added; More Announced Tomorrow

We’re a bit late on this other list of additions to the Toronto International Film Festival that went out late last week, but since we’re completists, we wanted to note which we thought were that sounded best. Nineteen more films were announced on top of the prestige 20 announce early last week that included fall touchstones like Soderbergh’s “Che,” Charlie Kaufman’s “Synechdoche New York,” plus new films by Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire), Richard Linklater’s “Me and Orson Welles,” which stars Christian McKay, Claire Danes and teen idol Zac Efron co-star and Kevin Smith’s hard-R-rated “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” among many many others.

Newer additions to the fest include Steve Martini’s “Lymelife” starring Alec Bladwin, Rory Culkin, Kieran Culkin, Cynthia Nixon, Jill Hennessy, and Emma Roberts (Julia Roberts’ niece); “What Doesn’t Kill You,” with Ethan Hawke and Mark Ruffalo; “The Stoning of Soraya M,” about an Iranian woman falsely accused of adultery from filmmaker Cyrus Nowrasteh; Aida Begic’s Bosnian post-war drama “Snow,” which won the Cannes Critics’ Prize this year and many more.

Here’s a few others straight from the press release.

“Lovely, Still” – Dir. Nik Fackler (USA World Premiere)
With the approach of Christmas causing him to feel lonely in life and love, Robert Malone (Martin Landau) returns home from his job at a grocery store to find a stranger (Ellen Burstyn) in his house.

Gigantic” – Dir. Matt Aselton, (USA World Premiere)
Smart and well-educated, Brian (Paul Dano) feels adrift in his life and his job at an upscale mattress store. The one thing he knows is that he wants to adopt a Chinese baby, and is on a wait list to do so. When he meets Happy (Zooey Deschanel), an odd and feisty rich girl sent to pick up a mattress for her father (John Goodman), he falls head over heels.

The rest of the list is here. TIFF’08’s final additions to its line-up are announced tomorrow. Jeffrey Wells is speculating that Oliver Stone’s “W” might be announced, but without any inside knowledge there, we’re at at least going to say we’re very skeptical about that one. Frankly, we’d be surprised if anymore power-house films get announced simply because the line-up already is stellar and anything else would be overkill. Not only that, don’t they have enough A-list material already? If TIFF’08 does get itself a bunch of bigger names it’s seriously going to be one of the strongest additions of the festival in years and certainly will have dwarfed any other North American film festival this fall.

Either way it sounds like leftover fall fare that’s total Oscar bait, “Milk,” “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, “The Road” and “Revolutionary Road” won’t be announced tomorrow and frankly, that’s about all the leftover big ones there are (“Valkyrie” must be too far off too, no?)
