Got a Tip?

More For… Monday? CQ, End of Violence, Batman Forever, The Crow

As you might have noticed we really weren’t around today. So yeah, umm Four For Monday – a feature that’s supposed to be Four For Friday (four random songs from four random soundtracks for the hell of it), is being recycled here, because, well, frankly cause it’s easy.

The first track we chose was a song from Roman Coppola’s extremely underappreciated and little-seen “CQ.” We really could do a whole post about this film and its very excellent, groovy sixties-like soundtrack, but suffice to say the French band Mellow do a fantastic job of sounding exactly like Air if they were trying to be a swinging ’60s band (in fact, for a while we were kind of convinced Mellow was just Air in disguise for a while; there’s not a lot of info on the web about these guys, but they do have six records). The next track, “Bad News” is from the Eels which comes from the Wim Wenders film, “The End of Violence.” We have to admit we’re semi-ignorant of the Eels other than the fact they tend to side on the lugubrious, but the melancholy songs this guys does that we’ve heard are stellar. This one is pretty fantastic song of contrition and self-doubt.

Thirdly we have a well-known hit from the mostly-terrible “Batman Forever” soundtrack (a perfect example of dumping ground B-side soundtrack leftovers at it’s worst), Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose.” I don’t care what anyone thinks this is a fucking great song, incredibly produced and really well-written. Just wait til Death Cab For Cutie covers it and Stereogum and the rest of the fawners will own up to always loving it. Lastly, we grab one song from “The Crow” soundtrack. We’re not really fans of it, it’s soundtrack or it’s goth subcultcha, but the movie does feature the Medicine song, “Time Baby III.” A post My Bloody Valentine, noise-rock outfit, we were huge Medicine fans back in the day. While we don’t follow all the various Brad Laner projects (there’s too damn many of them), we still have lots of fondness for this band (extra credit: Onetime Medicine bassist Justin Mendal-Johnson went on to have a long relationship with Beck as a member of his extended band and posse). [ed. man, can these four picks be anymore random?]
