Of course it’s a crying shame whenever a Pixar project gets put into turnaround because of the obvious potential that any Pixar project inherently has. What’s even more disappointing about the cancellation of “Newt” (which was originally scheduled to hit cinemas in 2012) was brought about due to similarities with Blue Sky Animation’s crushingly mediocre “Rio.” Even if narratively the two films would have been similar, we’re convinced that the Pixar effort would have had more to offer than "Rio" did, and see if you can disagree based on this latest batch of concept art that was created for the film.
The pictures remind us of the early concept art we got of the tropical locale of “Up,” or Disney’s luscious return to 2D animation with “The Princess and the Frog,” and if "Newt" had turned out anything like those two films then we’d have been very happy indeed. These are the kind of images you’d love to have hanging on your wall, or at the very least becoming your laptop wallpaper if they were a high enough resolution.
But alas, "Newt" was not to be, and "Brave" turned out to be the single Pixar offering last year. Next up for the prolific animation house is “Monsters University” which hits screens on June 21st, while Bob Peterson’s “The Good Dinosaur" is scheduled for the year after, and Pete Docter’s mind movie, believed to be titled “The Inside Out,” set for the year after that. Also on the docket is Andrew Stanton’s Pixar rehabilitation with “Finding Nemo 2,” and there’s also Lee Unkrich’s movie "Dia de los Muertos." People can talk about the decline of Pixar all they like, but there isn’t one film on that list that we aren’t hugely excited for. Let’s hope the return of Mike and Sully doesn’t disappoint in a few months time. [Bleeding Cool]
I think it would've been great. The pictures remind me of The Lion King and A Bug's Life.
It looks like it could've been one of their best films?
