Got a Tip?

‘Monsters’ Director Teams Up With ‘Wanted’ Helmer Timur Bekmambetov For New Sci-Fi Project

Whether or not the indie sci-fi pic “Monsters” is this year’s “District 9” remains to be seen, but either way its director looks like he has landed firmly on his feet.

Financially, it’s extremely unlikely the picture will be the same kind of left field success (it’s under the aegis of Magnet, not a behemoth like Sony; though we did like the film, see our TIFF review), but that’s relative of course. “Monsters” was made for $500,000, which always leaves frugal studio chiefs impressed.

So yes, director Gareth Edwards’ career has taken off, not unlike ‘D9’ filmmaker Neill Blomkamp’s has.

According to Deadline, Edwards has found his new gig in what is said to be a science fiction tale that he will write and will be produced by Timur Bekmambetov, known for helming “Wanted” and “Night Watch.” Details are fairly vague and there’s no title given right now. The film is described as being an “epic human tale set in a futuristic world without humanity.”

“Monsters” will hit U.S. shores in October and just made an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival. Edwards is one to watch and we wouldn’t be surprised if this is the first of a few new projects that bear his attachment. The sci-fi film still needs to be written though, so we could be waiting a little bit longer than we hope. Trailer below.
