Got a Tip?

‘Modern Love’ Trailer: Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Tina Fey & More Star In New Rom-Com Anthology Series

As a film and TV obsessive (let’s be real, if you’re reading this, you probably are one of us), you start to notice patterns and little subgenres that pop up from time to time. In the case of rom-coms, there’s a subgenre that you see come around every so often, and normally with less-than-great results — the rom-com anthology. But the upcoming Amazon series “Modern Love” hopes to avoid that subgenre’s classic pitfalls.

You know the movies we’re talking about — “He’s Just Not That into You,” “Paris, I Love You,” “New York, I Love You,” “Valentine’s Day,” etc.. These are films that try to analyze the various types of love stories in a funny, but ultimately heartwarming, way featuring about a half-dozen separate stories in one neat package. “Modern Love” is that basic idea, but with a twist — instead of putting the eight different stories in one 2-hour package, this Amazon project devotes hour-long episodes to each and every one. Plus, “Modern Love” sports one hell of a cast.

As seen in the new trailer for the series, Anne Hathaway and Dev Patel are two of the major additions to what is a star-studded cast. Each story features at least one “Oh wow, they’re great!” castmember and covers a variety of love story combinations. Sure, it still has that cheese and corny nature that might repulse some viewers, but for those that love a good rom-com with a healthy dose of heart and a quality message, “Modern Love” might be just what you’re looking for.

Joining Hathaway and Patel in the cast are Tina Fey, John Slattery, Brandon Victor Dixon, Catherine Keener, Julia Garner, Andy García, Cristin Milioti, Olivia Cooke, Andrew Scott, Shea Whigham, Gary Carr, Sofia Boutella, and John Gallagher Jr. Do you see what I mean? This is the type of cast that makes you second-guess writing the series off as yet another rom-com anthology story.

Amazon is expected to release “Modern Love” on its Prime Video service on October 18.
