“Mission: Impossible — Fallout” is probably the last major blockbuster release of the summer. We’ve survived two Marvel Studios films, a Dwayne Johnson explosion-fest, a Pixar masterpiece, and a big dumb dinosaur adventure in a mansion. All that’s left is Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt jumping out of airplanes, shooting guns, and running…a lot. And judging by the early social media reactions to this sixth “Mission: Impossible” installment, it appears that the action star still has a lot left in the proverbial tank.
The reactions online range from fantastic and incredible to…ummm…awesome and exciting. By and large, most critics seem to be falling in love with this latest spy thriller. However, that doesn’t mean there’s universal praise. Our own Rodrigo Perez (who’s full review will be forthcoming), wasn’t nearly as impressed as many of the critics.
“Laughably ridiculous I guess?” tweeted Perez. “This one takes itself way too serious too.”
As we wait for more nuanced thoughts from critics, it appears that the gist of it is simple – ‘Fallout’ is the sixth big, dumb action film in a series of relatively big, dumb action films. If you like Tom Cruise putting his life on the line to entertain the masses, you know exactly what you’re going to get. And if you thought ‘Rogue Nation’ was a high-mark for the franchise, then you should be pleased.
However, if you were hoping that Cruise and Co. would rise above the previous installments to shatter expectations and deliver a little more than over-the-top thrills and surface-level characters, then you may be disappointed.
But hey, it’s ‘Mission: Impossible,’ you know what you’re getting at this point, right? Buy your ticket accordingly.

The amount of snark & duplicitous asides in this are something else.
Share almost every top level critic saying “This is amazing! Possibly the best action movie since Mad Max: Fury Road! Best movie of the summer! Best Movie of the series!” and then make the bulk of the written material for the article be asides against the film about how the series is dumb, the new movie being unremarkable & one in-house critic saying it’s bad.
Like if you’re not interested in the movie just say it up front.
These guys are not ‘top level critics’. Get real.
