‘Miss Bala’ Trailer: The Bullet Settles Everything In Gina Rodriguez’s New Thriller

For most people, Gina Rodriguez is probably best known for her work on the CW comedy/soap “Jane the Virgin.” However, in recent years, the actress has been making interesting film choices, with roles in “Deepwater Horizon” and Alex Garland’s “Annihilation.” And now, with “Miss Bala,” Rodriguez is ready to step into the starring role in her first action/thriller.

“Miss Bala” tells the story of a young woman, Gloria (Rodriguez), who travels to Tijuana with a friend after the death of her parents. While there, she witnesses a murder and she’s taken hostage along with her friend. Now, in order to save her friend, Gloria is pulled into a complicated situation involving cartels and the DEA. And as seen in the first trailer, Gloria will do anything it takes to save her friend, whom she considers her only family.

Rodriguez never thought she’d be able to lead the cast of an action film, but is proud that Sony was willing to take a chance, not only on her, but with a mostly-Latinx cast. She explained to EW, “I had been dying to do action for so long, and it’s very difficult because people of color don’t have as many opportunities. And that’s not even like a ‘Woe is me.’ That’s just a reality, and that’s okay. That has been a reality of mine for many, many, many years. [With ‘Miss Bala’], Sony made a big-budget action film with a 95 percent Latinx cast and 95 percent Latinx production crew. It’s revolutionary. It’s just really great to live in these spaces that for so long I didn’t have the opportunity to.”

“Miss Bala” is a remake of the 2011 Spanish-language film of the same name, which premiered during the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. This new version is helmed by Catherine Hardwicke, who is best known for her work on the films “Thirteen” and “Twilight.”

“Miss Bala” hits theaters on February 1, 2019.
