We don’t know much about where Marvel Studios is heading post- “Avengers: Endgame,” other than the few projects that we know are in various stages of pre-production/production, but we do have an idea that at least one new character is likely going to appear sooner rather than later — Ms. Marvel. And speaking to MTV News, actress-writer Mindy Kaling explains that she has talked to Marvel about the possibility of bringing the character to life, or at least helping out in any way possible.
“I think the people I’ve spoken to Marvel about it are so excited about the character and I think that they’re trying to figure out what to do with it, and, I told them I would help in any way because I truly love her,” said Kaling.
She continued, “They really seemed interested, and I think they will probably do something. Now that there’s like this streaming service with them, it might be something like that, but I think they understand how much there is the excitement.”
For those not familiar with the character, the comic book series “Ms. Marvel” follows the adventures of Kamala Khan, the first Pakistani American superhero in the Marvel Universe. In the comics, she’s an inhuman (remember when they were going to be a thing?) that gains the ability to shrink, stretch, and morph her body isn’t various shapes and sizes. The drama comes into play when Khan has to deal with the normal anxieties of teenage life in America, while also dealing with her strict family and her desire to follow in the footsteps of her idol, Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has talked about wanting to bring Khan to life in the MCU, but hasn’t given many details. All he’s said is that it was important to establish Captain Marvel in the universe before having Kamala Khan, who as we stated is inspired by Captain Marvel to don her costume and assume the superhero identity, Ms. Marvel.
Kaling was also asked who she would like to see cast as the character. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the actress-writer didn’t give a specific name and thinks that Marvel should probably go with someone less obvious.
“You know, I feel like it might need to be an unknown,” Kaling said.
For a while now, Marvel Studios hasn’t been exactly shy about the desire to get Kamala Khan adapted for live-action. Will she end up on Disney+ or on the big screen? We will likely find out soon enough. With the success of “Captain Marvel,” now seems like the perfect time to bring “Ms. Marvel” to life.
