It’s been a couple of years since it was reported that Reese Witherspoon was going to reprise her “Legally Blonde” starring role in a new sequel in the comedy franchise. And since then, there hasn’t been much news regarding the third film. Of course, Witherspoon has been keeping busy on the TV side of things, with series such as “Big Little Lies,” “The Morning Show,” and “Little Fires Everywhere,” but no word on “Legally Blonde 3.”

Well, apparently, that is because Witherspoon and the producers of the new film are still working on a script, and they’ve brought in Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor to figure it out, according to THR. Previously, “Legally Blonde 3” was to be written by franchise scribes, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah. But now, Kaling and Goor are going to take a crack at the script.
Kaling, of course, is best known for her roles in series such as “The Office” and “The Mindy Project.” However, she’s been an established comedy writer for just as long, with credits such as episodes of “The Office,” “The Mindy Project,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and the recently released “Never Have I Ever.” She’s also the writer behind the comedy film, “Late Night.” Goor, on the other hand, is probably best known for writing and producing multiple episodes of popular sitcoms, “Parks & Rec” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

“Legally Blonde 3” is expected to continue the story of Elle Woods, the unlikely hero of the first two films. The first “Legally Blonde” was released all the way back in 2001, with the sequel released only two years later, in 2003. Now, almost 20 years after the second film, Witherspoon hopes that fans are still interested in the comedy film franchise.
