Without a doubt, in an industry overrun with true-crime series and docs, “Mindhunter” is easily one of the best of the bunch. Netflix’s drama series about the early origins of the FBI’s investigations into serial killers and their behavior has only two seasons under its belt but the show (produced and partially directed by David Fincher) is already a must-see for anyone interested in crime stories and/or just great filmmaking. Unfortunately, no one is sure whether or not the show will come back for a Season 3, despite fans anxiously awaiting news.

Speaking to Collider, “Mindhunter” cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt talked about the possibility of doing Season 3 and why he would be absolutely down for another batch of episodes. Unfortunately, when asked if he has any information about a new season of “Mindhunter,” the DP is just as in the dark as the rest of us.

“We just finished this movie [‘Mank’] and I’ve heard things are on hold for a little bit,” explained Messerschmidt. “We’ll see. Who knows? But it would be an honor to go back. I love working with David and adore the cast and the crew, and it’s been an incredible period of my life for certain. I’ve been really blessed to have the opportunity to work on it and contribute to it. It’s been particularly important and poignant in my career. But yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on.”
As he mentioned, the cinematographer has already finished work on Fincher’s upcoming feature, “Mank,” the upcoming black and white Netflix feature about the “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. And Messerschmidt detailed why it was intimidating making a film about “Citizen Kane” and why he’s excited to show the film to audiences.
“It’s intimidating to make that movie, but also a tremendous joy,” he said. “Black and white is just a fantastic medium to work in. As a cinematographer it’s amazing. You break the elements of the process down into the light and shadow and shape and texture. You don’t have the luxuries of color separation, all those tools that we have in color photography, just to develop a shot.”

He continued, “Working in black and white is the opportunity to perfect the perfect French omelet. It’s just a couple ingredients is all you kind of get. It was just an amazing experience. I look forward to seeing the finished film and showing it to people and hopefully people respond to it. It’s a really great story and any opportunity to work with David is… When my phone rings and he calls, it fills me with joy.”
While Netflix has yet to announce when “Mank” will be released, it’s expected that the film will arrive sometime in the fall, with October being the most likely month, per a producer on the feature. And unfortunately, even though Messerschmidt is unsure about Season 3 of “Mindhunter,” it appears that the show is most likely not coming back, according to what most reports are indicating. But the first two seasons are available now on Netflix.
