Despite its water cooler-like success on social media, with critics and audiences, it appears filmmaker Mike Flanagan won’t be expanding on his “Haunting” franchise series at Netflix anytime soon. The series creator took to Twitter to respond to a fan asking if he would be making a third chapter after working on “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor.”
The short answer is no; Flanagan alluding to Intrepid Pictures being too busy with other things at the moment, adding that they don’t have current plans to make any follow-ups.
“At the moment, there are no plans for more chapters. Never say never, of course, but right now, we are focused on a full slate of other Intrepid [Pictures] projects for 2021 and beyond. If things change, we will absolutely let everyone know,” Mike posted on Twitter.
That, “never say never” does leave room for a return one day, but it just doesn’t look like a return to the ‘Haunting’ series in the cards for the foreseeable future.
This news really can’t be surprising given that Flanagan has been busy with his new Netflix series “Midnight Mass,” which he’s been filming up in Vancouver and has recently completed production this month after delays due to COVID-19. The seven-episode streaming series focuses on an isolated island community that experiences various supernatural events after a mysterious priest’s arrival. We have to assume that “Midnight Mass” will debut on Netflix sometime in 2021, possibly around the fall, since it would make for perfect viewing during the Halloween season.
He’s also been tasked to direct a feature film version of Stephen King‘s “Revival” for Warner Bros. after tackling their “Shining” sequel “Doctor Sleep.” Something that very well could be taking up a bunch of his time in 2021 if they end up prepping and shooting it next year.
