Over the last weekend, many people were able to check out the almost-three-hour Director’s Cut of Ari Aster’s “Midsommar.” And if you’re a big fan of the original, theatrical version, it’s likely that the new cut is the preferred experience, considering the additions that the director made to his relationship drama masked as a horror film. However, no one really knows about when that cut of the film will be arriving for home release, with some being confused about exclusivity. Well, we’re here to clear that up.
You may have seen reports of the “Midsommar” Director’s Cut being exclusive to Apple. This is based on a report from Bloody Disgusting, who, to their credit, found some confusing wording regarding the new cut of the film being “exclusive to Apple TV.” However, according to a representative at A24, that’s not the case.
We can confirm that A24 will release the “Midsommar” Director’s Cut to folks digitally, via Apple, but the tech company doesn’t have an exclusive. Exact details are unknown at the time, but it appears that the Director’s Cut will be available on other platforms, as well.
Honestly, this makes the most sense, anyway, right? Unless Apple is going to shell out a ton of money for the rights to the film, Aster and A24 would likely want to have the Director’s Cut available to anyone that wants to view it. And with many people forgoing physical copies of films for streaming/digital versions, why not offer two ways to view “Midsommar?”
So, for those folks that aren’t completely entwined in the Apple ecosystem, don’t fret — the “Midsommar” Director’s Cut will be available to you, as well. A24 is going to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to experience the misery of the film (meant in the best possible way) in the comfort of their own home.
