While the big must-see movie of July is "The Dark Knight Rises," one week before Batman returns, geeks will be getting in a froth at Comic-Con, the annual San Diego shindig that offers up a bounty of genre/fantasy/action fare as the studios show off their baubles, with presentations that they hope will help boost box office dollars. And with less than a week to go, two of the biggest movies, by two of the biggest Comic-Con faves, are prepping to be on the convention floor and starting to build up buzz, with posters now landing for both.
First up, Peter Jackson — who recently wrapped 266 days of principal photography on "The Hobbit" movies — will be on hand to showcase what he's been cooking up in New Zealand. A new poster for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" has dropped, with Gandalf taking a little bit of a stroll in the midst of some pristine countryside. It speaks to the familiarity of J.R.R. Tolkien's books and Jackson's movies that the one-sheet can keep all the fantasy elements at bay and still be effective. Will Jackson try to sell the 48fps deal again? Will a new trailer arrive? Soon, all will be revealed. The film opens on December 14th. [Facebook]
Meanwhile, the man who was originally going to direct "The Hobbit" movies, Guillermo Del Toro, will be unveiling something quite different with the big sci-fi flick "Pacific Rim." So far all we've had from the movie is literally two stills, but we'd wager Comic-Con will be the start of a big push for the movie that features no A-list names (Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr., and Diego Klattenhoff) in a tentpole-sized movie not based on a comic, brand or toy. The poster seems to give a close-up look of the robot our heroes will piloting to defeat the monsters that attack Earth. What else will Del Toro be bringing with him? You'll just have to wait until next weekend. "Pacific Rim" opens on July 12th. [Cinema Blend]
"The poster seems to give a close-up look at the full suits the characters will be wearing"??? You're kidding right? That's one huge-ass robot that the characters will be piloting. You can see the, all tiny, standing in its shoulder.

I really like them both (or whatever).
I don't really like either poster.
