Prior to the release of his latest film, “The Book of Solutions,” it had been eight years since we’ve seen a feature from Michel Gondry. However, it appears the filmmaker isn’t going to wait that long before his next film. Not only does he have a planned musical, “Atlantis,” about the childhood of music superstar Pharrell Williams, on tap, but he is also apparently ready to take a trip into the realm of horror for a potential new film, as well.
Speaking to Cineurpoa, Michel Gondry was asked if there’s still a genre he’d like to tackle that he hasn’t worked in before. Fans of the filmmaker know that Gondry has been known to jump from genre to genre over his career, going from sci-fi dramas like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” to comedies like “Be Kind Rewind” and action films like “The Green Hornet.” But there’s still one genre that has eluded Gondry, and he’d like to rectify that.
“I would like to make a horror film. During COVID-19, I watched some series, especially about crime stories,” said Gondry. “It’s not very healthy, but it draws you in. I was so influenced by it that I might start writing something similar myself.”
Obviously, when you have a stylized filmmaker like Gondry working in a new genre, folks are immediately going to be curious about what he turns in. Horror is such a wide-ranging genre that filmmakers have been able to explore all the different aspects of storytelling. You have precise, dramatic, tense horror like “Hereditary” and then gory slashers like “Halloween.” Hell, Sam Raimi has made a career out of infusing slapstick comedy into horror. So, it’s intriguing to think what a filmmaker like Gondry could come up with.
It definitely doesn’t sound as if a horror film is next on his schedule. Perhaps he might not even tackle a horror film at all. However, it does appear that Gondry is interested in pursuing a horror film in the future, and we’re here for it.
Until then, you’ll just have to wait until “The Book of Solutions” arrives in a theater near you in the months to come.
