Just as his hero Steven Spielberg has John Williams, writer/producer/director J.J. Abrams has stayed true to composer Michael Giacchino. The man has tuned up every one of Abrams' films to date, in addition to working on shows he's produced like "Lost" and "Alias," and once again, they will put their talents together on another project.
With production gearing up to star in early in 2012, Abrams is definitely starting to put the pieces together for "Star Trek 2," but first he's putting "Super 8" to bed. With the movie hitting DVD and BluRay this week, in true Hollywood fashion a little shindig was thrown. ComingSoon was there, and they caught up with the composer and asked him about the sci-fi sequel. "Yes, I'll be back," Giacchino said. "I'll be there just as soon as they finish it."
This is some pretty great news. The Oscar-winning composer of "Up" (who was also nominated for "Ratatouille"), Giacchino is one of more exciting talents in the film composing arena, and certainly his work with Abrams is among his most memorable. Look no further than his beautiful work for "Super 8" for proof. And he won't have too much time to rest over the holiday as he'll be tuning up next spring's "John Carter" and next month's Abrams-produced "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol."
As for "Star Trek 2," details continue to be tight around the production with not much more news out there other than the cast returning en masse for another go on the Enterprise. MTV was also at the "Super 8" party and cornered Abrams about the recent news that Benicio Del Toro was being sought for a role, and he confirmed that very early talks were underway but not much more. "Well, we're just in negotiations, we're in discussions," Abrams said. "It's not even negotiations — just in discussion. But I would love to work with him. I've wanted to work with him for years, and this felt like a good opportunity."
"It's too early to talk about what the role is, but he's such an amazing actor. He's so versatile. He could sort of do anything," Abrams added. So there you go, one more piece of the "Star Trek 2" puzzle is in place, with lots more to come.
They should use the Star Trek theme music from the Insurrection end credits at the end of the sequel. The inclusion of the album version of Russell Watsonâs âWhere My Heart Will Take Meâ would be a bonus.
The Original Series theme music and new theme music in the last movie was unnecessary. The soundtrack was disappointing overall. âLabour of Loveâ was the best part of it.
