Got a Tip?

Michael Cera Hugs A Cactus In First Poster From Sundance Entry ‘Crystal Fairy’

nullAs always happens at this time of year, the Oscar nominations aren't even a day old and now we're turning our eye to the Sundance Film Festival which starts in just over a week. Those on the ground in Park City will be keeping their eyes peeled for the next "Precious" or "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," a small indie that will build steam to become a Best Picture contender. But we're pretty sure we can go ahead and count out "Crystal Fairy." But not because it doesn't look good.

Directed by Sebastian Silva, it's one of two movies he's bringing to Sundance with Michael Cera, but unlike the thriller "Magic Magic," this one looks a bit more like an obvious crowdpleaser. It's essentially a druggy road movie, and as this new poster suggests, it's embracing its oddball status. Here's the official synopsis:

Jamie is a boorish, insensitive American twentysomething traveling in Chile, who somehow manages to create chaos at every turn. He and his friends are planning on taking a road trip north to experience a legendary shamanistic hallucinogen called the San Pedro cactus. In a fit of drunkenness at a wild party, Jamie invites an eccentric woman—a radical spirit named Crystal Fairy—to come along. What is meant to be a devil-may-care journey becomes a battle of wills as Jamie finds himself locking horns with his new traveling companion. But on a remote, pristine beach at the edge of the desert, the magic brew is finally imbibed, and the true adventure begins. Preconceived notions and judgments fall away, and the ragtag group breaks through to an authentic moment of truth.

"Crystal Fairy" screens on the first day of the fest, so feedback on this one is just around the corner. It has no distribution lined up just yet. [HeyUGuys]
