Well, there’s only a handful of movies that are left to weigh in on the awards season race. “J. Edgar” and “Young Adult” both bowed out of the hoopla of Venice/Telluride/TIFF and so did one other film, Meryl Streep‘s “The Iron Lady.”
While they have stayed quiet letting everyone else battle it out (aside from an early and uneven teaser) the folks behind “The Iron Lady” are beginning to get the campaign rolling, starting with this new, and pretty spot on poster debuted at Yahoo. Granted, half of Streep’s head is given over to the Parliamentary buildings making it look like, as our pals over at Rope Of Silicon describe it, a half-finished Death Star. But overall, the poster is effective and it’s hard to deny that Streep undoubtedly looks the part (though she’s far more attractive than the real Margaret Thatcher ever was).
“Mamma Mia” helmer Phyllida Lloyd is directing, which gives us a bit of pause, but the supporting cast is decent, with Jim Broadbent, Alexandra Roach, Harry Lloyd, Olivia Colman, Anthony Head and Richard E. Grant also on board. If that isn’t enough, Clint Mansell is scoring the damn thing as well, which should add an interesting dimension. The Weinstein Company will release “The Iron Lady” right at the height of awards season in the U.S. on December 16th, with a U.K. release following through Fox and Pathe on January 6th, 2012. Here’s the full poster and we’re guessing a new trailer won’t be too far behind.
This is only the 2nd movie of Streep\’s where she is the only name above the title. The 1st one was 1985\’s \”Plenty\”.
Meryl Streep is gonna own this movie!
Can\’t wait
Nice to see effort put into posters that aren\’t ones done by Kellerman or that whathisnuts minimalist dude.
Now THAT\’S an iconic poster in the vein of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
