Radiohead axeman Jonny Greenwood may have just finished recording the score, and the film is in post-production, but as per usual, Paul Thomas Anderson isn’t rushing to get his latest out in the world.
Warner Bros. has set a December 12, 2014 release date for “Inherent Vice,” the Thomas Pynchon adaptation, that tells a 1970s Los Angeles-set story about inept, pot-smoking private detective Doc Sportello as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl, who also happens to be one of his ex-girlfriends (incidentally, we place it right at the top of our Most Anticipated Films Of 2014 list). The cast for this one is bonkers with Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Kevin J. O’Connor, Katherine Waterston, Timothy Simons, Peter McRobbie, Sasha Pieterse, Joanna Newsom, Maya Rudolph and Eric Roberts all with roles big and small.
Of course, the next burning question is where this will premiere. Will PTA have it finished in time to hit Cannes in May, where he unspooled “Punch Drunk Love“? Or will he return to Venice, which hosted “The Master“? Or perhaps he’ll choose Toronto this time around? Either way, PTA has options and just under a year to get all his ducks in a row.
So mark your calendars and change those plans to see Ridley Scott‘s “Exodus,” which opens the same weekend.
In other release date news: the “Entourage” movie drops on June 12, 2015 and “The Intern” starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro will arrive on September 25, 2015.
I hope that Hope will bring the movie to a higher level. My beautiful actress Jena Malone won't fail in doing that.
I love to see my favourite actress Jena Malone playing in this movie cause she brings always a lot to the character no matter how small her role is. Pretty Jena impresses me always and i'm dying to see her again in another movie. All in all she's amazing and she should be rewarded for that.
For those who have actually read the damn book, Witherspoon is playing an extremely minor character in the story. Katherine Waterston and Jena Malone are the main girls.
Enough time to cut out Witherspoon's scenes.
I had a feeling WB was going to release this in December since that's when they released Spike Jonze's "Her", another unconventional comedy from an auteur filmmaker starring Joaquin Phoenix. I was kind of hoping for October or earlier, though, but at least we don't have to wait until 2017 for PTA's next film!
I have a bad feeling this is gonna be one truly hot mess of a film.

Please let it be better than The Master. Has anybody read the script? Is it any good?
