Merry Christmas! Listen: Thom Yorke Unveils Radiohead’s Unused Theme From ‘Spectre’

Radiohead, spectreWell, it’s that kind of Christmas morning. The Weinstein Company delivered a stocking stuffer of Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino talking 70mm, “The Hateful Eight,” and more, and now Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has given his own Xmas gift.

You’ll recall the James Bond movie “Spectre” from back in November, and the theme song by Sam Smithwhich we called one of the worst elements of the bloated, not-so-good blockbuster. You’ll recall that Lana Del Rey and Ellie Goulding were once rumored to write the theme, and it turns out, Radiohead was also asked at one point. They, in fact, wrote a tune, but it was never actually used.

Yorke wrote on the band’s Soundcloud page about the song they penned, even including a “Star Wars” reference. “Last year we were asked to write a theme tune for the Bond movie ‘Spectre.’ Yes we were. It didn’t work out, but became something of our own, which we love very much. As the year closes we thought you might like to hear it. Merry Christmas. May the force be with you.”

Symphonically dark and grand, with Yorke’s haunting falsetto gliding over the track, it’s unclear if “Spectre” will see a proper release, but Radiohead offered it as a free download on their Soundcloud page, so perhaps it doesn’t matter. Merry Christmas from Radiohead then. Perhaps dream up in your mind how much more interesting “Spectre” could have been as you listen to the track below. Happy holidays all and thanks for reading this year.

  1. Yeah, this is definitely better than the Sam Smith track but it\’s still not a good fit for a Bond film. If nothing else, this just gives good reason to tear away the notable band/singer does a 007 theme rut and leave it in the hands of whoever gets tapped to compose the score for a few films.

  2. Well, I\’m guessing the guy who bet a boatload that Radiohead was doing the theme (yes, they had official bets with odds going over the song choice) is plenty pissed. I love this song but it definitely wouldn\’t have fit the Spectre, and since the film turned out so lousy, I\’m glad they didn\’t use it. Truth is though, every band wants to make a Bond theme, as in every director wants to make a Bond. Radiohead had already had a stab at creating a spy theme with an unused track for The Avengers (the Ralph Fiennes flick, not the superhero one) that definitely had a Bondy sound. My guess is that was more of the type of track the producers wanted for Spectre. Oh well, maybe Radiohead can wait til Chris Nolan makes his Bond.
