Spanish auteur Fernando Trueba has wowed the cinema world over the years, and he has the accolades to prove it. He’s won three Goya Awards for Best Director, a Silver Bear for 1986’s “Year Of Enlightenment,” and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1994 with “Belle Époque.” Now, Trueba’s 2020 drama “Memories Of My Father” finally gets its US theatrical release after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled its premieres at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival.

Based on Héctor Abad Facionlince‘s book “Oblivion: A Memoir,” Trueba’s film dramatizes the life of the author’s father, a renowned Colombian doctor and human-rights activist in Medellín in the 1970s. After cancer takes the life of one of his daughters, Faciolince’s father devotes himself to social and political causes even as his city becomes increasingly more violent. The film is at once a loving portrayal of a father and a snapshot of one of Colombia’s most turbulent periods as a nation.
“Memories Of My Father” stars Javier Cámara, Juan Pablo Urrego, Patricia Tamayo and Nicolas Reyes. The film also stars Luciana Echeverry, and Adia Morales, Camila Zarate, and Kami Zea. American auteur Whit Stillman also has a cameo as Dr. Richard Saunders.
Trueba directs a film from a script by his brother David Trueba. On top of being selected to screen at Cannes 2020, “Father” was also selected as the Colombian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. The movie has already won the Goya Award for Best Latin American Movie and Five Platino Awards for Best movie, director, screenplay, actor, and art direction.
To celebrate the release of the film, Quad Cinema in New York City will host a retrospective of Trueba’s work from November 14-17. “The Ages Of Trueba: From “Opera Prima” To “Memories Of My Father” includes a hand-selected curation of Trueba films by Columbia University professor and Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival Richard Pena. Movies in the retrospective include “Belle Époque,” “Chico & Rita,” “Opera Prima,” “La Niña De Tus Ojos,” “Calles 54,” and “The Artist And The Model.”
After Quad’s retrospective, “Memories Of My Father,” hits theaters on November 18, courtesy of Cohen Media Group. Watch a trailer for the film below.
