Melissa McCarthy Talks The “Very Confusing” Trailer For ‘Ghostbusters’

As detailed in a recent piece in The New York Times, a lot of thought is going into the new “Ghostbusters” movie, even if the reception so far hasn’t been all that great. In fact, the movie now has the unfortunate distinction of being the most disliked trailer on YouTube, with over 640,000 thumbs down. Oof. And it’s not helping Sony‘s marketing team that one of the lead stars is now coming out and admitting the trailers have been lackluster, if not confounding.

“It’s a reboot. I know, it’s weird that they said the ‘30 years ago’ because in this movie, the first one didn’t happen,” Melissa McCarthy told EW. “It’s that great story, but told totally differently.” She also adds that she told people on the studio level that the trailer was “very confusing,” but her concerns were basically ignored.

And yet, for all the talk that this “Ghostbusters” is a whole new ballgame, having Bill Murray and the rest of the original cast pop up in cameo parts (albeit in different roles) is only going to muddy those waters further. Moreover, the complaints about the trailers thus far aren’t so much that they are confusing, but rather that they aren’t particularly funny, and the vibe coming off them isn’t what many expected.

In short, Sony has their work cut out for them, and it’ll be very interesting to see how the marketing pivots before the film opens on July 15th.

  1. This movie will be terrible. Everything about it ruins the original and throws the entire original audience under the bus. This will be a massive failure. And a real flesh and blood bad guy!?!? Are you kidding?? Massive failure. Career ruinner.

  2. I found this an odd assessment of the trailer, as I had been non-plussed about the movie before seeing it but thought the trailer was hilarious and now I actually want to go.

  3. I’m really looking forward to this one. Huge fan of the original and its sequel, and the reboot looks like it’ll be a fun summer flick.
