Melissa McCarthy Says ‘Bridesmaids’ Sequel Without Kristen Wiig “A Terrible Idea”

It has been no secret that Universal wants to sequelize "Bridesmaids," but they've found a roadblock in form of its creator, co-writer and star Kristen Wiig. Demurring from any talk of a sequel, Wiig has done everything except sign on to another followup to the breakout comedy hit of 2011. She's lined up a slate of projects — "Imogene," "The Comedian," and the recently announced "Freezing People Is Easy" — but Universal isn't going to wait around. The studio has every intention of going forward with "Bridesmaids" sequel whether it's with Wiig or without, but it seems they may miss out on another integral ingredient to film's success.

E! caught up with SAG nominee and Oscar hopeful Melissa McCarthy over the weekend at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and when asked about a sequel with Wiig, she made her feelings very clear on the matter. "God, I wouldn't want to. I would never want to. I think it's a terrible idea," McCarthy said, adding, "…I know that nobody wants to do it unless it's great. If it is, I will show up wherever those ladies are."

As for Wiig, she continues to be elusvie about a "Bridesmaids" followup, not really saying "no," but also pointing to the fact she has other things she would prefer to do. Other the weekend she participated in a chat with director Paul Feig as part of the New York Times Arts And Leisure Weekend (which you can watch in full right here). Among the many topics broached — including plenty about abandoned plot threads in "Bridesmaids" including the Las Vegas trip, a dead body and a musical number (via Flavorwire) — was the sequel and the actress stated plainly, “ ['Bridesmaids' co-writer] Annie [Mumolo] and I are writing a different thing right now.”

But, lest you think Universal wouldn't dare move ahead without approval from Wiig, McCarthy or producer Judd Apatow, may we remind you of "Evan Almighty." May we also remind you of "Bring It On Again." If there is a buck to be made, they'll find a way to do it.
