Got a Tip?

Listen To An Exclusive Track From Composer Max Richter’s Upcoming ‘Mary Queen Of Scots’ Score

Even if you aren’t familiar with the work of musician and composer Max Richter, you’re still probably familiar with his work and you just don’t know it. Richter has been a consistent presence in the film and TV world with his very distinctly scores for projects like “The Leftovers,” “Miss Sloane,” “Hostiles,” and most recently “White Boy Rick.”

But perhaps his most famous contribution to film over the last couple years was in “Arrival,” where his song “On the Nature of Daylight” is used as the theme for the film (though the incredible Jóhann Jóhannsson did the score).

Richter’s latest project is the score for the upcoming awards contender “Mary Queen of Scots.” And in honor of the score’s impending release, coinciding with the film’s debut in theaters, we’re proud to present an exclusive track from the film. The song “A New Generation” shows exactly why Richter is one of the most sought-after composers working today. The song is beautiful and exciting, and just gives listeners a small taste of what they can expect with the entire score.

The score for “Mary Queen of Scots” will be released by Deutsche Grammophon on December 7, which is the same day the film hits theaters. You can listen to “A New Generation” below.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth 1. Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within court imperil both thrones––and change the course of history.
