Got a Tip?

Matthew Vaughn Says ‘Kick-Ass’ Is Getting A “F*cking Nuts” Reboot In Two Years

Believe it or not, it’s been nearly a decade since “Kick-Ass 2” hit theaters back in 2013. Unfortunately, at the time, the superhero sequel wasn’t nearly as beloved as the 2010 original, and the franchise quickly sputtered out. But over the past decade, it appears director Matthew Vaughn hasn’t been resting on his laurels when it comes to the franchise. In fact, he’s just biding his time before getting a big reboot of “Kick-Ass” in theaters.

According to a new interview with Collider, “Kick-Ass” filmmaker Mathew Vaughn (who wasn’t behind the camera for the 2013 less interesting sequel) explained that a reboot of the franchise is coming… in a couple of years. Why the long wait? Well, it appears Vaughn is waiting for the rights to the franchise to revert back, and then work can be done.

“We’ve got a big reboot of ‘Kick-Ass’ in two years. Big reboot,” said Vaughn. “It’s so fucking nuts that I can’t talk about it. But we’ve got that ready to go. All the rights revert back in two years and then we’re going to reboot it where people will be like, he is insane.”

It’s unclear what’ll happen to “Kick-Ass” when the rights come back to, presumably, Mark Millar, who created the comic book source material. Lionsgate handled the release of the first two films, but a lot has changed since then. Millar has signed an exclusive deal with Netflix, and the streaming service has already started developing quite a few projects based on the deal, including the release of “Jupiter’s Legacy” (which we all wish we could forget). So, perhaps when the rights come back, Netflix will be the destination?

Either way, it’s interesting that Vaughn is still involved with “Kick-Ass,” when the reboot comes. Though, it’s unclear if he will actually direct. It’s been a number of years and though Vaughn has continued to work with Millar on the “Kingsman” franchise, you had to assume that, eventually, the filmmaker would like to try something different? But maybe not. (Interestingly, The Playlist Podcast featured “Kick-Ass” in an episode about franchises that could easily be revived.)

What will the reboot look like? Well, in the comic books, there has already been a reboot of “Kick-Ass,” which featured the adventures of a new version of the character, this time a young Black girl. So perhaps that’s the direction that the new film will take? We’ll just have to wait a couple of years and see.
