Matthew McConaughey is having a rough year. His rebellion drama “Free State Of Jones” didn’t do much at the box office, and the critically slammed “The Sea Of Trees” is coming off its lackluster Cannes debut and headed into cinemas. But he’s going to end 2016 on a potential high note with “Gold,” a promising awards season drama from Stephen Gaghan, the writer/director of “Syriana.”
A former Michael Mann project, the film is based on the real life Bre-X Mineral Corporation scandal, and follows a down on his luck gold prospector who heads to Borneo and finds a fortune, only to realize that turning it into riches could be more difficult than he imagined. The film will apparently carry “a throwback vibe” recalling classics like “The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre,” but Gaghan suggests it’ll be something you’ll want to grab a bag of popcorn to watch too.
“It’s a type of huge Hollywood entertainment that I don’t think studios are making much of anymore,” he told EW.
Co-starring Edgar Ramirez and Bryce Dallas Howard, “Gold” opens on Christmas Day.
So the poster is trying to sell it as Indiana Jones and the trailer is trying to sell it as the Wolf on Wall Street?
