Last year’s “Jason Bourne” was supposed to be Matt Damon’s triumphant return to the character, and genre, that he revolutionized in the early 2000’s. After a failed attempt to reboot the series with Jeremy Renner in 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy,” the studio was only interested in continuing the series with its original star. Well, things didn’t go as planned when “Jason Bourne” was released, and now it seems as if Matt Damon is done for real this time with the Bourne franchise….maybe.
Speaking in an interview with the Toronto Sun, Damon said, “It would have to be a pretty incredible story to get us all back on the horse.” While that might sound like what he said before coming back with “Jason Bourne,” this time it doesn’t seem like Damon is holding out for artistic integrity. He might just see the writing on the wall. “This last one didn’t do as well as the one we did 10 years ago, so maybe people are done with the character,” continued Damon.
“Jason Bourne” was released last year to middling reviews. Currently sitting at 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was far from a critical darling. It did okay business at the box office, pulling in over $400 million worldwide, but domestically, the film was only ranked 3rd in the series. Not a total failure, but definitely not the series rejuvenation that the studio had hoped for.

However, the actor is refusing to say he will never return to the franchise. It’s just unlikely, and it all depends on, “If we can figure out a good story.” So it might just be that Damon truly is waiting for a great story, but odds are, he’s probably not coming back as everyone’s favorite amnesiac spy.
OMG that last one was a Turkey…… And I really had confidence in Greengrass and Damon. I own the first 3 and they proudly sit on my shelf. Not every movie has to have a zillion cars destroyed and, Vegas of all places in the world??? And Tommy Lee Jones?? I wouldnt pick up the blu-ray if it was in a $5 bin at Best Buy even.
I skipped it. All the advertising seemed really pretentious. “You know his name”.
The only way for this to come back in a great way is for Landy to be “killed” off-screen in Rio de Janeiro, while on a secret mission regarding deal occurring in Sydney about an up and coming program in Tokyo. However, Bourne is now the target of a mission that traces all the way back to Richard Webb during a buyout in Lisbon just prior to his death in Beirut. With everything out in the open, Bourne goes on the run (Bucharest, Rio, Tokyo, Sydney, Miami, Dubai, Lisbon) one last time to hunt down the ones responsible for Landy’s death, and burn everything from his past to make himself untraceable.
