Marvel Studios has been on the forefront of making sure films are made using special IMAX filming techniques. This allows for folks to go to an IMAX screening and see a film that is carefully crafted to have a unique viewing experience on the biggest screen possible. Now, Disney+ is hoping to give you a version of that experience from the comfort of your home.

On Instagram, one half of the Russo Brothers, Anthony Russo, announced that three of his MCU films are coming to Disney+ in a new “IMAX Enhanced” presentation. Basically, Disney+ is going to offer IMAX aspect ratio for 13 of the 26 MCU films starting this Friday, allowing for some of the Marvel films to get rid of the letterbox black bars when you watch them on your TV screen.
While that is cool, giving fans a chance to see the full aspect ratio, as it was originally intended, you have to qualify the “IMAX Enhanced” experience a bit. Part of what makes IMAX so special isn’t just the aspect ratio but what it’s like to sit in those theaters with the incredible sound and absolutely massive screen. Can you simulate that on Disney+ from the comfort of your couch? Probably not. But you do get a couple of inches more of some of your Marvel favorites, so that’s cool, I suppose.
Again, the IMAX Enhanced Marvel Studios films are being released on Friday, as part of Disney+ Day, the celebration of the second anniversary of the streaming platform. Here’s the list of the 13 MCU films that are coming to Disney+ with the IMAX Enhanced viewing experience:
Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1
Captain America: Civil War
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Doctor Strange
Black Panther
Thor: Ragnarok
Avengers: Infinity War
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Captain Marvel
Avengers: Endgame
Black Widow
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
