Marvel Reveals Animated ‘What If?’ Series For Disney+; MCU Actors Will Lend Their Voices

True believing fans of Marvel comics know one of the joys of the comics are the wonderfully weird and strange “What If” line of comic books. In short, “What If” is the series that reimagines classic Marvel stories in “Twilight Zone”-ish one-off, what if adventures that sometimes have dark and unexpected endings. What if the Hulk had the brain of Bruce Banner? What If Jane Foster had found the hammer of Thor? What if Dr. Doom had become a hero? The list goes on and on, and some of these stories are absolutely delightful reworkings of the beloved legends. Well, today, during Disney’s investors call—wherein Disney revealed Disney+, their upcoming streaming service launches November 12— Marvel StudiosKevin Feige revealed that “What If” would join the Disney+ roster as Marvel’s first animated series.

“Another dream project for us? “What If?’,” Feige said. “Taking inspiration from the comic book of the same name, each episode will take a pivotal moment from the MCU and turn it on its head, leaving audiences into uncharted territory.”

One of the examples that Feige said would be the first episode? What If Peggy Carter, not Steve Rodgers became Captain America. “What if Peggy Carter became the first super soldier?” he asked rhetorically, “And what if Steve Rodgers had remained a scrawny kid, but joined the fight in an armored suit built by Howard Stark.”

While he didn’t say them by name, Feige suggested that Haley Atwell and Chris Evans would reprise their voice roles on the show as Peggy Carter and Cap, respectively. “New and returning cast members will be returning their voice to their animated counterparts.”

“This gives you a sense of how we plan to explore the MCU in fresh and exciting ways,” he said.

“Marvel’s What If series was one of the first to capitalize on fans’ obsessive attention as a jumping-off point, resulting in stories that ran down wildly unpredictable paths,” i09 wrote in a piece titled, “The Secret Beauty of Marvel’s What If Comics” that’s definitely worth a read into the history of these excellent spin-offs. No timeline has been given on these shows, but given that they’re animated and may take a minute to make, one would be smart not to expect them until at least year two of Disney+.
