Got a Tip?

Marvel And Sony Reportedly Can’t Agree On Who Should Be The New Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider-ManAs fans have been rejoicing about Spider-Man returning to Marvel, which apparently means everyone will get the reboot they’ve been dreaming of, even though the comic studio has already stated they’ll be putting Peter Parker back in high school again. Some have forgotten, however, that Sony still has a say in what happens, and apparently from the start the studios can’t seem to agree on who should sling webs.

On today’s Meet The Movie Press, The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider revealed that Asa Butterfield was out of the running for the role (which may be partially due to him talking about the part before he had it), and that the race is now down to two names: Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) and Charlie Plummer ("Boardwalk Empire"). The tricky part? Sony wants the former and Marvel wants the latter, though there’s no word on why they have a difference of opinion on the matter.

That said, a decision will have to come soon either way as whoever is going to play Spidey is gonna have to get the spandex on soon and jump on the set of the currently filming "Captain America: Civil War." [via Comic Book Movie]

  1. "stop being PC and giving everything to people of color" yeah, right, superhero movies are not white enough. that\’s exactly what the world needs: more white avengers.

  2. a chinese spiderman would be brilliant. an indian female spiderman would be brilliant. an elderly black spiderman would be brilliant. Basically, we\’ve done the whining white tween version, so some variety would be interesting now.

  3. Let\’s have a Chinese Spiderman. You will never run short of them, if something happens. Cos there are like a billion of them and they all look alike. No one\’s gonna notice the difference.

  4. The racial diversity in casting brigade is out in full force and runnin\’ wild on this piece. Asa Butteredbread is out though, so the film lost part of its potency as a sleep aid.

  5. The fanboy argument has little weight compare to the the shameful history of our nation. Because of that repressive history most of our super heroes are white. Suck it up, change your "lenses" and embrace the new world of acceptance.

  6. I welcome a new Spider-Man but man, I am so tired of this whitebread Peter Parker casting. With this casting, it\’s THREE PETER PARKERS, all white as can be and not really spectacular for the most part(judgment still out on this new one, of course) but, personally speaking, give me Miles Morales. Give me Gwen-Stacy, give me anything DIFFERENT at this point: why do we need to have the same old Peter Parker stories?

  7. True, there\’s been a black Spider-Man in the comics for some time now, in an alternate continuity. Peter Parker is still the Spider-Man of the core Marvel Universe. No one is saying Miles Morales can never appear. It just makes sense to start off with Peter, since it\’s the character\’s introduction into the Marvel cinematic universe. The real issue here is that Sony came running to Marvel to fix their mess and they want to interfere already. Sony needs to butt out. They messed the franchise up, while Marvel has put out critically acclaimed blockbusters time after time. If I\’m Sony, I sit back, shut the hell up and watch the money roll in. And if I\’m Marvel, I\’m reminding Sony of their failure every hour on the hour. 😉

  8. quite so. Miles Morales, I believe, is the Spiderman of color. It\’d be far more interesting to see a totally new incarnation of the character now. It\’s not agenda casting — it\’s just something new, and different, and less bloody boring.

  9. Anton, so sorry that the cultural dominance agenda of white people of the last 500 years in America hasn\’t been quite long enough for you. Plus, there\’s been a black Spider-Man in the comics for the past 4 years.

  10. Exactly. You want to kill Spidermans reboot and produce a DOA (Fantastic Losers 4) with the Web Slinger? YEAH. Make it a person of color and then say goodbye Spider Man. This is not a racist comment. This is a Fanboy & Fangirl observance. If you don\’t adhere to the Fanboy/girl accepted view and source material, then you mess up bad. The Avatar: The Last Airbender movie did that by ignoring its source material and it was a GIANT FLOP with the fans and no sequel will be made, thus killing the franchise. Hollywood needs to learn that Fandom is where the money comes from to support comic book hero movies and they hate it when you disregard the source material. Nuff Said !
