With the country feeling more divided than ever, maybe we need a movie like “Patriots Day” to show us what we’re capable of in our darkest hour. And while the strain of patriotism in the trailer for the new movie can sometimes feel a bit jingoist, the film is perhaps a reminder that we’re better united against a common cause, that split into factions.
Mark Wahlberg reteams with Peter Berg just a couple months after the true story “Deepwater Horizon,” for this dramatization around the events of the 2013 Boston Marathon, and the bombing that rocked the world, shook a city, and saw authorities mobilize to catch two terrorists whose horrific act claimed innocent lives. Here’s the official synopsis:
An account of the Boston Marathon bombing, PATRIOTS DAY is the powerful story of a community’s courage in the face of terror.
In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers, Police Commissioner Ed Davis, Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese and nurse Carol Saunders this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston.
Co-starring Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, Michelle Monaghan, Alex Wolff, Themo Melikidze, James Colby, Michael Beach, Rachel Brosnahan, Christopher O’Shea, Jake Picking, Jimmy O. Yang, Vincent Curatola, Melissa Benoist, and Khandi Alexander, “Patriots Day” opens in New York and Los Angeles on December 21st, goes wide on January 13, 2017 and will close AFI Fest.
