We already know that Marvel and Sony are going much younger in the next Spider-Man reboot, with nineteen year-old Tom Holland playing the high school age Peter Parker. And so, Peter’s dear old Aunt May will also be younger than the previous actresses who have played the character, Sally Field ("The Amazing Spider-Man" films) and Rosemary Harris (Sam Raimi‘s "Spider-Man" trilogy).

Variety reports that Marisa Tomei will now play the relative who cares for the orphaned youth. And if you’re wondering why the role has been cast so early, it goes beyond making sure Spidey pops up in the currently filming "Captain America: Civil War" (though THR notes Aunt May may pop up in that already stuff film too). Both studios want to lock down the actors for a potential trilogy, and that means locking down schedules far in advance, not just for the forthcoming standalone ‘Spider-Man’ film to be directed by Jon Watts, but probably for followups too.
A writer is also being sought to help Watts with the script, and more casting is underway. The next Spider-Man movie arrives on July 28, 2017.
I was going to be crass and make a joke about wheatcakes but instead I\’ll remark on the reason for casting a much younger Aunt May is likely because they\’re intending to go for the Ultimate Aunt May version (or a close approximation, at least).
Everyone is thinking the same thing. There is no role that can unsex Marisa Tomei.
^lol, seriously.
