Well, it only took one season, but the “not-Boba Fett” Disney+ “Star Wars” series, “The Mandalorian”—once set to be its own original entry into the world of Mandalorians—will now include Boba Fett. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in 2002’s “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones,” will appear in season two of the Lucasfilm series.
How does that work given Jango Fett died in the aforementioned “Attack Of The Clones” and Boba Fett, his son, seemingly died in “Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi”? Well, for one THR’s sources tell them that Morrison will indeed play Boba Fett, meaning he did escape the Sarlacc pitt as he did in the non-canon comics and books. And while the young Boba Fett, was a slightly different clone than the ones from the Clone Wars, that accelerated to adulthood at fantastic speeds, he was still a clone of Jango, so the actor playing both roles makes sense.

Morrison is almost 60, but “The Mandalorian” is set in the post-‘Return Of The Jedi’ 30-year stretch of storytime that hadn’t really been explored in the “Star Wars” Extended Universe until the series started. Boba Fett is expected to play just a small role in season two of the series which is probably a relief if you’re looking for “Star Wars” to become its own thing and get away from its incessant fan service.

Season two of “The Mandalorian” seems it’ll be replete with fan nods as is. Not only will the Dark Saber from “Star Wars: Rebels” make a major appearance (teased at the end of season one), but Ahsoka Tano from “Star Wars: Clone Wars” and also ‘Rebels’ is expected to turn up in live-action form as portrayed by Rosario Dawson. Boba Fett appearing adds to it all the more, but if Tano and his appears are minimal, maybe it won’t feel so forced.
Season two of “The Mandalorian” will also include actor Michael Biehn (“Aliens,” “Terminator”) and features filmmakers such as Robert Rodriguez (like “Alita: Battle Angel”) and Peyton Reed (“Ant-Man”). Co-executive producer and creator Dave Filoni recently said he would only direct one episode this season. Co-creator and co-executive producer Jon Favreau recently said he was already writing season three.
One note of caution: THR says, “While sources say Morrison is playing Boba Fett, it’s always possible that something sneaky involving cloning is going on.” This could mean Morrison could actually be playing Clone War Trooper Rex, given he’s really the voice of every clone and Rex and Ahsoka are closely tied together and fought together once again in “Star Wars: Rebels.” Filoni really loves his ‘Clone Wars’ and ‘Rebels’ characters and this could be a way to continue keeping them in the mix. Stay tuned.
Three more Disney+ “Star Wars” series are currently in the works, a Cassian Andor-focused “Rogue One” spin-off prequel starring Diego Luna from filmmaker Tony Gilroy, an Obi-Wan Kenobi limited-series (which sounds like it might be more of a one-off) starring Ewan McGregor as the exiled Jedi and an untitled, recently untitled show by “Russian Doll” creator Leslye Headland, details of which are under wraps.
