If there has been one consensus out of the advance screenings for Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" thus far, it's that it's not something you can prepare for. While the movie has thus far received mostly glowing notices (check out our own review here), the film has also been described as difficult to embrace and perhaps even a little cold. Certainly, it's not something that mainstream audiences are going to flock to, but The Weinstein Company know this, and their gambit to build up the buzz in the weeks leading up to its bow at Venice and TIFF, before dropping it into limited release right after its festival screenings, is a calculated move to strike while the iron is hot.
And thus, a new trailer has arrived today for the movie and again, it's one that's both excitingly compelling and intriguingly strange. A monologue by Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), founder of the The Cause, soundtracks another look at the frantic, uneven life of Freddie Quell, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who becomes deeply involved in the organization. Many are already tipping the latter actor for an Oscar, and early predictions usually fall either way, but if this takes off with critics the way it has with fans who have caught the movie already, it's a definite possibility. And certainly, it looks like he commands the hell out of this picture.
"The Master" opens on September 14th. Watch below. [The Film Stage]
Is that Melora Walters from Boogie Nights/Magnolia about 19 seconds into the trailer?
PTA is absolutely brilliant. Academy will you please give the actor award to Joaquin Phoenix, he clearly deserves it. I am just in awe of this film and I don't even now if they will release it on this side of the planet. No chance in hell I will have the chance to see it on the big screen.
Is Amy Adams good in this? I've barely heard anything about her in comparison to Phoenix and Hoffman
interesting. i saw this film a couple days ago in san francisco and i absolutely loved it. but, i've noticed in all of the trailers there is a heap of footage not used in the actual film. like, the bulk of this trailer pretty much. great trailer though for an incredible film.
Can the Academy just craft one giant Oscar for this movie and give it to PTA now with the inscription, âBecause we fucked up all the other times you deserved this over lesser talented individuals, here is your Academy Award for All Awards – 2012â, then below that inscription – a drawing of a man on a motorcycle hot-rodding over a giant set of dick and balls with a word balloon that says âStay Cool 4-Everâ.
I'm sure this is gonna be a great movie and all but the knocking on the window gimmick throughout the trailer is a annoying. Worked well in the A Serious Man trailer, not here.
How is Amy Adams in this?
Wonderful, though I prefer the She Wrote Me A Letter clip (which is absolutely, stunningly amazing)
