Got a Tip?

‘Madame Web’: Dakota Johnson To Star In ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff Film For Sony

Ever since she left behind the “50 Shades” franchise, Dakota Johnson has wowed audiences with her risky roles in some of the most interesting indie features over the past several years. But it appears the actress is ready to jump back into blockbuster filmmaking with her own ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff film, “Madame Web.”

According to THR, Dakota Johnson is set to star in the upcoming “Madame Web” film from director S.J. Clarkson and Sony. The film joins the ranks of “Venom,” “Morbius,” and all the various other ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff films the studio is working on, as it tries to expand the cinematic universe.

While it’s unclear exactly what the plot of the “Madame Web” film will be, the character is truly a unique persona in the ‘Spider-Man’ mythos. A clairvoyant hero, often depicted as old and in a wheelchair, Madame Web is used primarily as a side-character and mentor for various Spider-Folk. In fact, she’s often on the sidelines, far, far away from the actual action. It’s doubtful that Sony would hire Dakota Johnson just to drown her in old age prosthetics and a wheelchair, so it’ll be interesting to see just how much they change up the character for the film.

Johnson is one of the busiest actors working today. Just at this year’s Sundance, she starred in two features, “Am I Ok?” and “Cha Cha Real Smooth.” She’s also attached to a number of other projects. Recently, she was in the cast of the awards contender, “The Lost Daughter,” as well.

With “Spider-Man: No Way Home” being a record-breaking success and the “Venom” franchise showing its strength after two films, Sony is going all-in on the ‘Spider-Man’ cinematic universe. It’s still unclear how well “Morbius” will do and which of the other spinoffs will actually get into production, but if folks like Dakota Johnson are signing up, then maybe we’ll have to give these films a shot?
