Everything that’s old is now new again television. Executives are finding a goldmine in bringing back old shows for fresh runs, with “Twin Peaks,” “Fuller House,” “X-Files,” and “Will & Grace” all revived with solid success. “Roseanne” is coming around the corner, and “The Office” is in development. Now, another sitcom could be back on the dial.
Sony Pictures Television Studios is now eyeballing a revival of “Mad About You.” Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt have had informal talks about reprising their roles for an eighth season, though curiously, NBC — who were home to the original run — are not among the networks in discussion to pick it up. As for the storyline, it will disregard the season seven finale, and, instead, pick up with Mabel being accepted to college.

The move is an interesting one, particularly for Reiser, who has been enjoying taking some streaming service work lately in fare like “Stranger Things” and “Red Oaks,” and dropping into indie movies like “The Little Hours” and “War On Everyone.” However, this is also legacy material for Reiser — who was also a producer on the “Mad About You” — not to mention far more lucrative than guest appearances and indie gigs, so perhaps it’s not a surprise he’s slowly turned around on the idea of returning, after being cool on the idea for so long.
