Yes, “The Last Airbender” is definitely one of the worst movies of the year and reached a new low for M. Night Shyamalan’s career that many thought couldn’t be surpassed after his scary wind thriller “The Happening.” However, for those who were predicting that M. Night Shyamalan’s critically savaged film rang the death knell of his career, bear in mind that “The Last Airbender” has already passed the $100 million mark in domestic box office alone and still has many key territories to open in and judging by the trailer to the upcoming horror thriller “Devil,” Hollywood still thinks there is much to made from his name.
“From The Mind Of M. Night Shyamalan” is the major selling point for the film which boasts a story and producing credit for the director. No mention that it comes “the people who brought you” “30 Days Of Night” (writer Brian Nelson) or “Quarantine” (directors Drew and John Erick Dowdle). Nope, Universal still believes that a concept from Shyamalan will be enough to get asses in the seats. We’ll see if that gamble pays off.
As for the film, whatever, it looks like another one-setting thriller that seems to be en vogue of late joining projects like “Frozen” and “Buried.” The cast is mostly unknowns, though Chris Messina (“Julie & Julia,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) and Geoffrey Arend (“(500) Days Of Summer”) may register some “hey, it’s that guy” comments from audiences.
“Devil” opens on September 17th.
This does look like a good, throwback thriller. The "From the MIND of M. Night…" credit is a little over the top though IMO.
This looks somewhat decent, which begs the question "Who's pretending to be M. Night and why?"
I'm glad. M. Night is still a great director. I'll watch anything that he originally comes up with.
